BOOKS

I do a lot of reading, some for fun, some for research.  But the two almost always coincide.  Here are some of my recent favorites:

Patricia Highsmith

Strangers on a Train
The Price of Salt (as Clare Morgan)
The Blunderer
Little Tales of Mysoginy

Expedition Whydah. [By Barry Clifford with Paul Perry]

The true story of the world's first excavation of a pirate treasure ship, and the man who found her.

Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly is the author of the Harry Bosch detective series, and I might go so far as to say that he is the Ross Macdonald of our generation.

Ross Macdonald

Ross Macdonald's real name was Kenneth Millar.  If any writer can be said to have inherited the mantle of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, it was he.  Between the late 1940's and his death in 1983, Ross Macdonald gave the American crime novel a psychological depth and moral complexity that his predecessors had only hinted at.  He served as the president of the Mystery Writers of America and was awarded their Grand Master Award, as well as the Mystery Writers of Great Britain's Silver Dagger Award.

The books I have read are:

David Poyer

Author of the Tiller Galloway series, which I am a big fan of.  Those books, in order, are "Hattaras Blue," "Bahamas Blue," "Louisiana Blue," and "Down to a Sunless Sea."  But that's just the tip of the iceburg.  His website includes many of his published articles and speeches, with advice to aspiring writers.

Thomas Harris

Author of the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, with quite possibly the best batting average of any writer you could name.  All four of his published novels have been national bestsellers, and have spawned FIVE major motion pictures.

Black Sunday (film produced by Robert Evans)
Red Dragon (first filmed as "Manhunter" by Michael Mann)

Hell's Angel. [By Ralph "Sonny" Barger, with Keith and Kent Zimmerman]

The life and times of Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club.

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. [By Peter Biskind]

How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N' Roll Generation Saved Hollywood.

Hughes: The Private Diaries, Memos, and Letters.  [By Richard Hack]

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.  [By Michael Ledwidge]

0743442857.01.jpg

By far the best run-and-gun book I have ever read!

Howard: The Amazing Mr. Hughes. [By Noah Dietrich]

Click here to read my review of this book on Amazon.  (That lousy no-good misleading greedy corporation.)

LAbyrinth.  [By Randall Sullivan]

LAPD Detective Russell Poole investigates the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the implications of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal.

Farewell, My Lovely.  [By Raymond Chandler]

The Kid Stays in the Picture.  [By Robert Evans]

This book is awesome.  It deals with a struggling new company which harvests clean energy from the sea, and an eco-terrorist unit that is plotting to destroy it.  They are also under investigation by the FBI, and there is a surprisingly good love story as well.  The writers' attention to detail and great premise make this an impressive and enjoyable read.

Shoot Out: Surviving Fame and (Mis)Fortune in Hollywood. [By Peter Bart and Peter Guber]

The Da Vinci Code. [By Dan Brown]

Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member. [By Sanyika Shakur, aka Monster Kody Scott]

Bringing Down the House: How Six MIT Students Took Vegas for Millions. [By Ben Mezrich.]

The Family Crucible. [By Augustus J. Napier and Carl Whitaker, PhD]

Wild Side. [By Steven Gould]

The Sun Also Rises.  [By Ernest Hemingway]

Cracked: A Doctor's Story.  [By Dr. Drew Pinsky]

The Bourne Identity.  [By Robert Ludlum]

MOVIES

The best movie ever made:

Heat

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino face off in the film that made me choose the career I did.  Written and directed by Michael Mann.

All-time favorites, listed alphabetically cause I don't want to rank 'em:

American History X

Any Given Sunday

Oliver Stone captured seemingly every element of this game.  I don't like/watch/play football, but this film fascinates me.

Arrival, The

Shot largely in my hometown of Altadena, CA, this sci-fi thriller overcomes the handicap of starring Charlie Sheen.

Basic Instinct

Yeah, it's got the controversial and graphic sex scenes.  But that alone doesn't make it great!  It's a very good modern-day film noir.

Beach, The

Contact

Deals with so many issues so efficiently, and remains human.

Cop Land

Devil's Advocate, The

Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves.  For a long movie, it's fast-paced.  Well-shot, well-directed (Taylor Hackford), and well-written, too.

Emperor's New Groove, The

The humor is like that of "The Simpsons," only in a Disney film!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Johnny Depp's funniest role.  I anticipate the sequel...

Fight Club

Easily my second favorite movie of all-time.  Wild, sweet, and cool (to borrow a phrase from The Crystal Method).

Heist

in the company of men

Lots of people told me "Welcome To My Mind" reminded them of this movie, so I checked it out.  It immediately became one of my favorites.  You think you know where it's going, but you really don't...

Irreversible

One hell of a harsh film.  Its saving grace is that it's told in reverse order, so by the end of the movie everything is nice again.  Great for a first date!  A real chick flick!

L.A. Confidential

Sets the bar for what a "classic" film noir should be if you want to make one today.  Every element is there and in its place.

Lost in Translation

Minority Report

I wasn't expecting a gritty detective thriller.  God, I love this one!

Monsters, Inc

Despite being considered a kids' movie, it's an instant classic.  I demonstrated clips from this movie at work for customers every day and never once got sick of it.

Mulholland Drive

Sinister, yet surprisingly able to be figured out (for a David Lynch film).  Lots of references to "Sunset Boulevard," too.

Narc

I knew this would be good, but I was still blown away.  Across the board, I think Ray Liotta has been underrated for most of his career.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Se7en

Notorious for redefining the serial killer genre.

Sunset Boulevard

Creepy, and masterfully done.

Talented Mr. Ripley, The

Italy--plus a complex plot that gets better every time you watch it.

Thomas Crown Affair, The

I wish I had Thomas Crown's life sometimes!

Training Day

25th Hour

A perfectly-cast and perfectly-acted film with great characters and development.

Way of the Gun, The

Everyone who should like this movie hates it.  I f***ing love it.

With a Friend Like Harry

Dark, ominous, and suspensful.  Slow but always moving forward.  One of the best-told stories ever.

MUSIC

Nine Inch Nails - "The Downward Spiral"

Got me into industrial music.  Now Johnny Cash has a great cover of "Hurt," the video of which disturbs even Mr. Reznor himself.

Sister Machine Gun - "The Torture Technique"

More experimental than Nine Inch Nails at the time, this album showed me what industrial music could really be.

The Chemical Brothers - "Loops of Fury EP"

Transitioned me from industrial to electronic music.

Deepsky - "In Silico"

Filter - "Title of Record"/"The Amalgamut"

Got me through some tough times.  The best rock band out there, in my humble opinion.

The Catherine Wheel - "Ferment"/"Chrome"/"Happy Days"/"Like Cats and Dogs"/"Adam & Eve"/"Wishville"

These guys rival Filter for best rock band, although they are currently on haitus.

Deftones

Listening to the Deftones evokes the feeling that it's hot out, but you've got the air conditioning on.

Sasha - "Airdrawndagger"

This is Sasha's debut full-length album.  It won not only the Annie Nightingale Award for "Album of the Year," but also "The Most Eagerly Awaited, but Ultimately Disappointed Album of the Year."  And what a website!  I wish I did enough traveling to require a satellite map to let my fans know my current location.

The Crystal Method - "Tweekend"

Ken Andrews

The former frontman of Failure and On has a new band, Year of the Rabbit.  He is also a producer and audio engineer for such acts as Pete Yorn, Blinker the Star, Perry Farrell, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.  The man can do it all.  A Perfect Circle performs a cover of the Failure song "The Nurse Who Loved Me" on their latest album.

Hybrid

Adaine

A friend of mine by the name of Cade Moore is a guitarist, engineer, and co-founder of this band.  I actually wrote the bio for their website and press kit.
